Who were the last 5 Grand National winners?

Excitement for the 2019 Grand National is reaching fever pitch. This year's event could see the first back-to-back winner since 1973 and 1974 when Red Rum famously galloped to victory. With the race just a few weeks away, 2019 Grand National betting sees a lot of fans backing Tiger Roll. Can the horse win the race again or will one of his rivals gallop to success?

It has been over 40 years since a horse won back-to-back Grand Nationals. Could the last 5 Grand National winners give us any insight on which horse will win this year?

2018 – Tiger Roll

Gordon Elliott’s Tiger Roll has been dominating races since winning the Grand National a year ago. The nine-year-old has won twice already this year having come first at Navan and Cheltenham.

The latter saw Tiger Roll win the Cross Country for the second year in a row. In 2018, Tiger Roll used it as a springboard to win the Grand National.

2017 – One for Arthur

One for Arthur won the Grand National as an eight-year-old. It was the same age as Tiger Roll one year later. Younger horses have done well over the last few years, and One for Arthur continued the streak of young, strong runners.

One for Arthur has raced just twice since winning the Grand National and both were poor outings. He will return to Aintree this year to run alongside Tiger Roll.

2016 – Rule the World

Rule the World won the Grand National as a 33/1 shot in 2016. The gelding was a strong nine-year-old who hadn’t won any of his 14 previous races.

Rule the World stepped up on the day and performed well above expectations. Due to an extensive injury record, Rule the World was retired shortly after his big win.

2015 – Many Clouds

Many Clouds’ 2015 Grand National win led to him being voted that year’s British Jump Racing Horse of the Year. It was a dream race season for the gelding.

Many Clouds started the current trend of young horses under 10-years old winning the Grand National. Since Many Clouds ran to victory, the three subsequent winners have all been eight- and nine-years old. The trend could continue in 2019 with Tiger Roll aged nine.

The gelding raced seven more times following his Grand National victory with three races ending in wins. However, his 2016 Grand National return ended in a 16th place finish. Many Clouds died in 2017.

2014 – Pineau De Re

Pineau De Re won just one time after his 2014 Grand National success. That victory came at Carlisle. Pineau De Re’s two Grand National appearances post-win saw him finish 12th or lower.

The gelding won the Grand National as a 25/1 shot. Since leaving horse racing, Pineau De Re has been retrained and performs as an eventer.

Pineau De Re was the last horse over 10-years old to win the Grand National. He was the fifth consecutive horse aged 10-years old or older to claim victory at Aintree.
