The end of Hennessy Gold Cup and the beginning of Ladbrokes Trophy

The History of Hennessy Gold Cup goes a long way back. It was established in 1957 with the name as Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. It used to be staged at Cheltenham initially until the year of 1960 saw the event transferred to Newbury. The first race was won by Mandarin, a horse owned by Peggy Hennessy. While Taxidermist was the second running winner of the race, which was ridden by John Lawrence, who was later named as Lord Oaksey. The whole event was sponsored by the Hennessy family who founded the race in the first place. It is worth remembering that when the race was transferred to Newbury, Mandarin again was the winner horse in 1961.

Arkle was the twice winning horse of the race who was burdened with 12st 7lb on both times, while Denman and Burrough Hill Lad were also renowned horses for their successes in the race. Many Clouds was the first horse who made the record of winning both the Hennessy and the Grand National in the same season of 2014-15.While the other horses named Teeton Mill, One Man and Bobs Worth won this cup on their way to wins in the Cheltenham Gold Cup or the King George.

Its name remained as the Hennessy Gold Cup for 60 years until the Hennessy family ended their sponsorship in what was the longest-running commercial sponsorship in racing. Now Ladbrokes are the new sponsors of this exciting race, hence known as Ladbrokes Trophy.
